When it comes to tactical footwear, 511 Tactical boots stand out as a popular option for professionals and outdoorsmen. Known for their durability, comfort, and performance, 5.11 makes these boots to meet the demands of almost everything. From urban settings to rugged terrains, they’ve got what it takes to keep your feet protected and dry. In this review, we’ll delve into the key features, performance, comfort, and overall value of the 5.11 A/T Mid Waterproof Tactical Boots.
Design & Construction
5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots are crafted with a blend of high-quality materials that prioritize durability and performance. The upper is primarily made from a durable polyester fabric. It is both lightweight and robust, providing excellent resistance to abrasions and wear. The shoes feature a mid-cut design that offers enhanced ankle support, making them suitable for both tactical operations and outdoor activities.
One of the standout features of these shoes is the unique design of the outsole. It incorporates a multi-directional tread pattern that provides exceptional traction on various surfaces. The outsoles are also designed with a rubber compound that enhances grip without compromising durability. The 3D molded rubber toe is enforced, and the Tac Dry® + BBP coating helps to protect your feet and keep them dry.
In use, the structure of the laces provides a sturdy cross pattern for tightening up the tongue to your foot. The eyelets are tough nylon loops that have been double-stitched securely to the upper. One small note. The laces have a tendency to go over the tongue, so you’ll want to make sure it’s in the correct position before tying them. There’s also a handy pull loop on the back to help you leverage getting the boots on or off.
Comfort & Fit
Comfort is crucial for tactical footwear, and the 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots excel in this area. They come with a cushioned insole that provides ample arch support, making them suitable for extended wear. The mid-height design contributes to a secure fit around the ankle, which is especially beneficial for those who require additional support during high-impact activities.
Users have reported that the shoes fit true to size, but as with any footwear, it’s recommended to try them on or refer to the sizing chart. We found them to fit narrow in width, with good room for toe expansion and positive heel support. The fit was further improved with aftermarket insoles, more on that below. The breathable mesh lining helps regulate temperature and moisture, keeping your feet comfortable during long hours of wear, which is particularly important in hot weather conditions.
511 Tactical Boots: Performance
The performance of the 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots is where they truly shine. Whether you’re on a tactical mission, hiking, or engaging in outdoor activities, these shoes deliver reliable performance. The lightweight construction allows for agility and speed, while the reinforced toe and heel provide added protection against impacts and abrasions.
One notable feature is the 5.11’s proprietary “Quick-Dry” technology, which is integrated into the shoe’s materials. This technology allows the shoes to dry quickly if they get wet, making them ideal for environments where water exposure is a possibility. This feature has garnered positive feedback from users who have found themselves in unpredictable weather conditions.
Quick-Dry Technology?
We found the Quick-Dry” technology particularly helpful at the gun range. Our outdoor range has a small creek and a good amount of areas that stay soggy during rainy seasons. The grass doesn’t always get cut on time, so it also holds a lot of moisture in the mornings. If you try to wear tennis shoes or sneakers you’ll end up with wet feet, and soggy socks in a hurry. The 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots not only keept our feet nice and dry, but also helped in preventing twisted ankles when walking across uneven ground.
At first, we were skeptical of the spacing of the multi-directional tread pattern on the bottom of the boots. It felt stable on flat ground, but we wanted to see how it performed in off-the-grid terrain. We were pleasantly surprised at how well it handled thick mud. Scraping to clean them off was easy, without the silt getting stuck in all the crevices that most boots have. The tread pattern on the 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots gives you the feeling of walking across swampy environments like you’re rolling through on a set of 35″ Toyo Open Country A/T III all-terrain tires.
Versatility
Versatility is a key attribute of the 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots. They can easily transition from tactical environments to casual settings. Whether you’re on duty, hiking in the mountains, or simply running errands around town, these shoes blend functionality with a modern aesthetic. The sleek design means they don’t scream “tactical,” allowing for a more subtle look.
Moreover, the shoes are available in various color options (four at the time of writing), giving users the freedom to choose a style that suits their personal preference. Before I got my review pair all muddy, I was able to wear them to church on Wednesday night, and to an aquarium with the kids the following weekend. No one batted an eye, or asked me if I was wearing “combat boots.” This versatility makes them a great investment for those who want a reliable shoe for multiple purposes.
Durability
Durability is a hallmark of the 5.11 brand, and the A/T Mid Tactical Boots are no exception. The high-quality polyester upper is designed to withstand the rigors of everyday wear and tear. Users have reported that the shoes maintain their integrity even after extensive use in challenging conditions. We experienced their ruggedness while working at the gun range, and while hiking around an old farm that was overgrown.
Flexibility does not always equate to durability. We found the stitching and overall construction to be solid, in wet, or dry environments. For the price, the build quality is there, ensuring that these shoes will last through countless adventures. Whether you’re climbing rocky trails or navigating urban landscapes, the 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots are built to keep up with you and endure.
Price VS Value
In terms of pricing, the 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots are competitively positioned within the tactical footwear market. The MSRP is $165. While they may be priced slightly higher than some budget options, the quality, performance, and durability they offer justify the investment. For those who frequently engage in outdoor activities or require reliable footwear for work, the long-term value of these boots is evident.
90-Day Review: 511 Tactical Boots
Ninety days in, how well did the 511 Tactical Boots hold up? Our main concern was the areas around the toe box and the inner/outer mid-soul connection near the heels. These areas take a lot of wear and tear. It’s common to see a separation between the materials on boots in these areas. We’re pleased to report that after around 180K steps, the 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots held up very well in these areas.
There is no detectable separation around the rubber toe box, or between the inner/outer mid-soul of the boot. During this ninety-day period, the boots were worn indoors, and outdoors on a variety of surfaces. These include, but are not limited to, mud, gravel, sand, concrete, and stone masonry. The multi-directional tread pattern on the bottom also held up well. Minimal signs of wear are showing around the rear of the heel.
Two things we did notice about the 511 Tactical Boots during the evaluation. If you get them wet, be sure to thoroughly dry them out before wearing them again. If you wear them damp, they are prone to develop a musty smell that can be difficult to get rid of. Secondly, if you plan to wear these boots for hiking, you may want to customize their fit. Adding a quality insole can increase comfort, weight distribution, and performance.
Prolatus T-100 Elite
After some research, we decided to pair the Prolatus T-100 Elite insoles with the 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots. Prolatus recommends removing the manufacturer’s insoles before installing. We agree with this recommendation and found that the thickness of the insoles replaced the need for the factory-included ones. After installing the Prolatus insoles, we found that hiking in the 511 Tactical Boots became more stable and comfortable. Going up inclines, and descending down declines felt more balanced. There was less friction inside the shoes when crossing over uneven, or rough terrain.
511 Tactical Boots: Worth The Hype?
Overall, the 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots are an excellent choice for anyone in need of a reliable, comfortable, and versatile tactical shoe. Thoughtful design and robust construction make them suitable for a wide range of activities, from tactical operations to outdoor adventures. The combination of comfort, support, and performance sets them apart in a crowded market.
Whether you’re a law enforcement officer, military personnel, or an outdoor enthusiast, the 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical Boots offer the features you need to tackle your day-to-day challenges effectively. Their durability and comfort ensure that they’ll be a staple in your footwear collection for years to come. If you’re in the market for tactical shoes that can keep up with your active lifestyle, they should definitely be on your radar.
My overall rating of the 5.11 A/T Mid Tactical boots: 5/5
